AI search visibility: how to check, measure, and improve it

AI search visibility is how often your brand is named, cited, or recommended when people ask AI tools — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude — questions in your category. It barely correlates with Google rankings, which is why it needs to be checked and worked on as its own channel.

How to check your AI visibility (the honest way)

You don't need a paid tool to get a real baseline. You need a consistent, repeated test:

  1. Build a query set. 20–30 full-sentence questions real buyers ask at each stage: "what is the best X for Y", "X vs Z", "is X worth it", plus your branded queries.
  2. Run them across engines. ChatGPT with search enabled, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode at minimum. Log three things per query: were you named, who was named instead, and which sources were cited.
  3. Repeat monthly with the same set. AI answers vary run to run. One pass is an anecdote; the same test repeated is a trendline you can act on and report.

The second column of that log — who gets named instead of you — is usually the most uncomfortable and most useful data a business sees all quarter.

The metrics that actually matter

What to ignore: any single-pass "visibility score" without a disclosed methodology, and vanity metrics like raw mention counts with no competitor baseline. A one-time score is almost useless; the trend under a fixed methodology is everything.

What actually improves AI visibility

The levers are the same ones that decide citations everywhere in generative search: answer-first pages with one question per page, structured data delivered in static HTML, open access for AI crawlers, consistent brand facts across the web, and — the biggest single lever — earning accurate presence in the third-party sources AI engines already cite for your buyers' questions. The full playbook is in our guide on how to get cited by ChatGPT, and the underlying discipline is explained in what is GEO.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my AI search visibility for free?

The free method is a manual audit: write down 20–30 real questions buyers ask in your category, run each one through ChatGPT (with search), Perplexity, and Google AI Mode, and record whether your brand is named, which competitors are named, and which sources get cited. It takes a few hours and gives you a more honest picture than most automated one-time scores.

What is an AI visibility score?

An AI visibility score is a metric some tools produce, typically the percentage of tested prompts in which your brand appears across AI engines, sometimes weighted by position or sentiment. Treat any score skeptically unless the vendor discloses the prompt set, sample size, and engines tested — AI answers vary between runs, so a score from a single pass is largely noise. The trendline across repeated identical tests is what carries signal.

Why is my AI visibility low even though my SEO is strong?

Because AI engines reward different signals than Google rankings: third-party corroboration, extractable answer-first content, and consistent brand facts across the web. A site can hold page-one rankings while being absent from the review sites, comparison articles, and communities AI engines actually retrieve from. Studies repeatedly show only a minority of AI citations come from page-one results.

Which metrics should I track for AI search visibility?

Track five things: citation rate (share of test queries where you are named), share of voice versus named competitors, source coverage (how many of the sources AI cites for your queries include you), sentiment and accuracy of how you are described, and AI-referred traffic in your analytics from domains like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. Together they tell you whether visibility is improving and whether it is converting.
